When emailing first came out in the early 90’s, I have to admit I was not keen on using this new form of communication. I resisted the change for as long as I could but when my new job required the use of emailing, I had to get on board and use this new form of communication or be left behind.
When I finally did embrace this change, I started using it in my personal life too and began having fun with it. I had moved away after graduating from college so all of a sudden keeping in touch with people was much easier and I actually started hearing from people more frequently.
I don’t know if you remember this but for most people their first email account was through their job. They used their work email account to receive their personal emails. But that changed when people got home computers and personal email accounts. So then anyone and everyone could email and eventually emails and the use of emailing started to change and this brilliant communication tool that allowed me to keep in touch with people on a more regular basis, started to feel more and more like a chore and was clearly being misused and overused, especially in work. Face to face communication had become a thing of the past.
And talk about impersonal – how many emails do you get a day from friends or family or for work that are JUNK? Or have you ever had an email misinterpreted? Have you ever had an argument via email? So now the email that used to keep you in touch with friends and family has become a burdensome task that most people complain about. Which brings me to the subject of this post.
About 2 years ago I was skimming my emails and I came across an email from one of my customers. I opened it and it wasn’t a text email but a video email. I checked on the link and sat back in amazement as my customer gave me feedback regarding our last appointment. (I am a Realtor by trade). That one video (or Vmail as they’re called) changed the way I perceived online communication. There was a personal touch to that communication that had been lacking for years with the Text emailing and I saw immediately how I could use this new form of communication to communicate with my customers, family and friends. Since that day I have been excitedly using this new communication tool and can’t even tell you how it has changed the way I do business and the way I communicate with family and friends.
Let’s start with my business: Here is an example – I get an email from a potential client that is contacting me through my website. Do I just type back a response? NO! I send a video introduction and now I am no longer a stranger to this person and that lead turns into a client. You can’t get better marketing than that and at $9.95 per month, you can’t beat the price. For communicating with family and friends, nothing is better. My family lives all over the country but now with this communication tool, birthdays/holidays are no longer spent on the phone. I can sing “happy birthday” via video instead of typing it in an email or leaving it in a message on the phone. My parents can watch their grandchild open his presents on his birthday or Christmas LIVE. Anyone can access pictures and videos on my personal site, I can video instant message w/my sisters so we can all “see” each other as we talk. I can blog, podcast, do a LIVE broadcast, and so much more. You can’t beat this as a communication tool. Like Text Emailing was once, Video Emailing and online Video communication is the new way to communicate and as I personally experience every day, so much better than text.
